1.794 kilowatt-hours per cubic metre: how the Canary Islands landed in the water world record books

In an archipelago with no rivers, where rain is more a date on the calendar than a seasonal certainty, almost every drop of fresh water arrives through an industrial process. It’s against that backdrop, far from trivial, that a piece of news slipped past most people outside technical circles: a Canarian pilot plant now holds the world record for the lowest energy consumption in seawater reverse osmosis desalination.

It’s called DESALRO 2.0 and it’s run by the Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias (ITC), a public company with more than twenty-five years of activity working on water, renewable energy, biotechnology and computing applied to the archipelago’s sustainable development. In 2025, Guinness World Records certified its performance: 1.794 kilowatt-hours per cubic metre of water produced, the lowest figure ever recorded worldwide for a seawater reverse osmosis desalination facility. Technical numbers, sure, but ones that translate into something very concrete: less energy means lower costs and fewer emissions for every litre of drinking water that reaches taps across the islands.

The ITC presented the latest developments of this work at ISSD-WM 26, an international gathering focused on sustainable water management, where Canarian researchers laid out not only the progress on energy efficiency but also the optimisation of the full water cycle and the resilience of these facilities against climate change, topics that in the Canary Islands are anything but conference abstractions.

Just look at Fuerteventura to understand why. The island has lived for years with what citizen groups and environmental organisations describe as a structural water emergency, made worse by a tourism model that pours water into swimming pools, golf courses and hotel facilities on semi-arid land. It’s no coincidence that among the long-standing demands of the Canarias Tiene un Límite platform is a call for a public consortium to guarantee water through renewable energy rather than leaving the question to the market alone.

A record like the ITC’s doesn’t resolve that tension between tourism, residents and natural resources on its own, but low-energy desalination technology is one of the concrete tools the islands have to cut their dependence on fossil sources in water treatment, a sector that has historically eaten up a significant share of the region’s energy bill.

There’s also a less-cited but not minor point here. Results like this strengthen the Canary Islands’ scientific standing well beyond tourism and astrophysics, the field the archipelago is already known for thanks to the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. A small public institute landing in the world record books for a technology tied to the islands’ everyday survival says more about what innovation actually means on an island territory than most institutional press releases ever could.
