Buried among the hundreds of pages of technical documentation for the overhaul of the Estadio de Gran Canaria is one detail that sounds more like science fiction than a construction brief: mesh modules mounted on the roof, designed to intercept the tiny water droplets carried by the north wind Canarians call the alisio. The collected water would be filtered and used, among other things, for irrigation. It’s called a captanieblas, a fog catcher, a biomimetic idea borrowed from how certain desert plants and insects survive by harvesting moisture from the air.
The project, designed by architecture firm L35 and the winner of the tender launched by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria for the Siete Palmas complex, aims to turn the island’s stadium into one of the best in Europe ahead of the 2030 football World Cup. It’s worth being precise, though, about what’s already locked in and what still exists only on paper.
The concrete figures are there: the technical brief caps energy demand at 60 kWh per square meter per year, with a reduction of more than 30% versus a standard reference scenario. The stadium’s giant roof, already nicknamed “the crown” for its €93 million price tag, will house a roughly 2.5 MWp photovoltaic installation, designed primarily for self-consumption. The stated goal is that at least 45% of the energy used should come from renewables generated on site.
It’s equally important to say plainly: these are design targets, not achieved results. Solar output varies through the day and across seasons, while the highest demand peaks often coincide with night matches, exactly when the panels produce nothing. Real-world performance will depend on the final design of inverters, any storage systems, and load management, details that will only be known once the building is finished and certified.
The fog-catching system, the most striking element, is also the most uncertain. The documentation explicitly excludes it from the current contract and defers it to a future, dedicated tender. In other words, it’s a studied idea today, part of the stadium’s environmental horizon, but without an assigned budget or an awarded contract. It might never get built, or it could end up as one of the new stadium’s most photographed features. Which one happens depends on technical and financial decisions still to come.
The context this project sits in is no accident. The Canary Islands have spent recent years pursuing an energy strategy aimed at doubling the archipelago’s renewable capacity, backed by more than €800 million in public and private funds, and in July the Cabildo of Lanzarote signed the first protocol under the regional climate law’s Renewable Acceleration Zones. A stadium built for a global event like the World Cup becomes a showcase for that model too, with all the risk that comes with presenting a still-paper project to the world.
The original tender for the renovation was declared void once already, before L35 won the commission. The bidding window for the parts not yet awarded, including the fog-catcher chapter, closes on September 11. Only then will it become clear how much of this green bet stays on paper, and how much turns into concrete, panels, and perhaps nets that drink fog.
